How to Register & Vote in School Board Elections
Colorado Springs school board elections may not make headlines like national races, but they shape the education and resources that affect your community. Decisions made at the school board level influence everything from curriculum and school safety to budget allocation and extracurricular opportunities for students. Even if you’re not a parent, these decisions can affect your property value, available community programs, and the quality of local schools. And ultimately – it’s your tax dollars paying for the policies and decisions that the school board makes. Voting in Colorado Springs school board elections is a powerful way to have a voice in your community and ensure that local schools reflect the values and priorities that matter to you. Don’t sit on the sidelines – it’s time to register and get ready to vote!
How to Check Your Voter Registration & Director District
You may already be registered to vote, but do you know what district you’re voting in? Some school board elections allow anyone in the district to vote across the district; D49 is unique as it is divided up into “Director Districts.” You’re expected to vote within your specific director district and will only have candidates in your director district on your ballot come November.
First, check your registration to ensure that you’re registered to vote:
- Visit the Colorado Secretary of State website.
- Enter your information (name, date of birth, and zip code).
- Click on the “County & District Information” tab.
- Review the listed district information
Next, find out which director district you’re in:
Visit the District 49 website and take a look at the district map page.
Not Registered to Vote?
Getting registered to vote in Colorado Springs is easy!
Simply visit the “Voter Registration” page on the El Paso County Clerk & Recorder’s website. Near the bottom of the page, you’ll find three options to register: Online, by Form, and In-Person. Be sure to make sure that you’re eligible and that you register before the deadline (you can register online through election day – but it’s better to register sooner rather than later if you’re wanting to get a ballot in the mail).
Note: In Colorado, if you haven’t voted in the past 2 general elections, you will not be mailed a ballot. The easiest way to make sure you get one is by updating your voter registration.
